We all want to be successful and accomplished , whether it is in our careers or with personal endeavors. There are no step by step guides or any one way to accomplish a goal. There are many different paths and roads that can be taken to reach a certain point; however, those who have accomplished what they set out to do have similar mindsets.
For those of us who still have a ways to go, we can give ourselves the advantage of adopting these similar mindsets and start thinking like successful and accomplished individuals.
1. Create A Plan
Keep an eye on the big picture and create plans for yourself. These plans need not be set in stone or stringent in anyway. In fact, a flexible plan that allows for changes and rearrangement are more successful. You may think in terms of a year, 3-years, 5-years, or even 10-year plans to accomplish your goal.
Your plan should not be so long that you aren’t really focused on it. Neither should it be so short a time period that you are demanding too much for yourself. You should be able to break down your overall goal into smaller attainable tasks. Maybe you need to research a goal or certain field. Maybe you need to work as an Associate before moving to the next steps.
This plan needs to be flexible so that you have a way to evaluate and make changes. Maybe your overall goal is to lose 30lbs, but you have hit a plateau after two months and you are not even halfway to your goal. This would be a perfect time to re-evaluate your timeframe, your workouts, or your eating habits.
You may decide to change all three. Maybe you are deciding to switch careers and go back to school. After starting school, life happens and you are about to have a child. You can decide for yourself whether continuing on through your pregnancy is best or maybe taking a semester off is best for you. Your plan needs to fit you and your ever changing values and needs.
2. Don’t Be Afraid To Fail
Successful and accomplished individuals know that they may not succeed with their first tries. It may take several tries, rejection letters, re-writes, or trips back to the drawing board. Inventors can come up with 200 other ideas before they hit on the one idea that they were looking for.
You may find yourself having to start over at different places to work before landing your dream job. Successful people know that failures or setbacks come with change. In starting a business, your profits may not match your expenses that first year. Maybe your new signature dish is not well received by critics.
Now being afraid of failing – or criticism, for that matter – comes with the territory of trying to accomplish something great.
3. Be Persistent
If you want to be successful, you have to be persistent in the pursuit of your goals . There will be challenges, obstacle, setbacks, naysayers, and fake friends. These things will make you question why you are set on your goal. These things will make you want to quit. They will work to demotivate you. But if you give up at every let down, you will not accomplish anything.
Being persistent through the setbacks can help to provide further motivation. If you are almost halfway to your goal, you are less likely to give up suddenly. Every goal takes time. Frankly, anyone who is persistent is bound to achieve their goal eventually. I cannot say that being persistent will make the process go faster, but the end goal will arrive.
4. Never Settle
You should never let yourself settle for less than you set out to do. It may seem easier to stay in that job you do not like, day in day out, just because it gives you a paycheck. You can do so much more. If you have the drive to, work outside of your current job, making moves towards your dream career.
We live in a generation where having entrepreneurial endeavors is a norm. You may want to create a storefront on Etsy, or offer tutoring. Keep your overall goals in the forefront of your mind along with your limitations and motivations.
Keep feelers out and never stop job searching until you have a position that makes you happy. Build on current skills. Learn new ones. You should never feel stale or unmotivated. If you are losing momentum in your goals, it may be time to re-evaluate and see where you are currently and where you want to go.
5. Network
Successful people know that each person they meet is an opportunity to find someone to help them achieve their goals. The people you meet can know someone who works in the field that may provide valuable insight. You can pick their brains for information on how they started or what their daily job activities entail.
You can find job opportunities that have yet to be posted on career websites. You can find learning opportunities. Many people find their next job by networking through friends or colleagues. Depending on your goals, you may find an agent, an editor, a manager, or a publisher through various conferences or networking opportunities.
6. Find Like-Minded Individuals
Having friends with similar goals can be a major advantage. Like-minded individuals make great sounding boards to bounce ideas off of. They can give you feedback. They are able to help to hold you accountable for your goals and smaller tasks that you set for yourself.
They can make great business partners. You can learn from their mistakes and setbacks without having to go through their same process. You can learn from each other and motivate each other in your endeavors. Having like-minded friends can provide an asset.
7. Be Confident
As much as I dislike the saying, ‘fake it until you make it.’ It does hold some merit. You should be confident in yourself and your abilities. When you are just starting out pursuing the career of your dream or some endeavor that you have never tried before, you may doubt yourself. Sometimes this prevents some of us from even getting started. That is where this saying can help to keep us from stalling.
We should be confident in ourselves no matter what. But there are times when that feeling is lacking. We should never let this keep us from doing something. If you feel lacking, remember you are an awesome person and you can do anything that you set your mind to. Imagine yourself as the confident, inspiring person that you always wanted to be and pretty soon you will not have to imagine it anymore. Your confidence in yourself and your abilities will naturally be there.
Remember. When going after something that you want, it can be a challenge. And it is that challenge, that journey to the finish line where we want to be that will make the accomplishment worth pursuing.
By changing our mindset and finding our own paths, we become successful and accomplished. You prove to yourself that you can achieve any goal you can set for yourself.
